Frequently Asked Questions

How is Rolling Horse Ranch different from other leadership programs with horses?

A core philosophy is that horses are truly partners in RHR training. You will find some "fun" activities in other similar programs, however, horses are often "used" in these programs as tools and objects for the lessons, not partners are often treated in a manner that mirrors authoritative leadership, not coherent leadership—using force and coercion. At RHR, we are committed to changing the leadership and organizational environments by respecting our partnerships with horses. A great deal of time and energy goes into honoring and engaging the RHR horses as cofacilitators—sentient beings who have much to offer in learning and awareness.

Is horse experience needed?

No.  Our horse partners interact with you as a participant in the activities which are all done on the ground. You will not be riding the horses.

What if I don't like horses or I'm afraid of them?

Anyone can participate in our programs with the guidance of our facilitators. Our primary goal is to provide an environment that is conducive to learning while maintaining the safety of our participants, the horses, and our staff.

Do I need special clothing or equipment?

First off, make sure you wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. You will be sitting, standing and walking around grass, dirt, and dust most of the day and white is definitely not the color of choice. Please don't wear any sandals or other open-toed shoes around horses. They can step on you—most likely they won't, but safety is a very high priority for us.

During the spring and summer months it can be sunny and warm in Ramona so bring and/or wear a hat and some sunglasses and stick some chapstick in your pocket. During the fall and winter, it can be cooler, with different kinds of weather. So we suggest that you dress in layers. Programs will be cancelled in case of significant rainfall or other inclimate weather.

Can the programs be customized to the needs of our team, organization, or group?

Yes! We are committed to your organization achieving its goals and objectives and to being completely satisfied with the programs. We will work with you to design special activities oriented towards a particular outcome.

Where are you located?

We are located on five acres just northeast of San Diego, in a community called Ramona. It is about one hour drive to the San Diego airport and beaches. There are motels, casual dining restaurants and fast food eateries within five minutes of the ranch.
